Understanding nutrition as one of the key factors in health.
Scientific evidence is very clear about this: we can definitely manage our own health through the things we daily eat.

It is a good thing that nowadays more and more people take notice and change the way they live in order to embrace the benefits of a healthy nutrition and exercise.
If a healthy body and mind is what you want, understanding nutrition is of the utmost importance. In its infinite wisdom nature has provided us with everything one needs to promote growth, immune system, mental alertness, physical strength and so on. Without a basic understanding about nutrition it will be very difficult, if not impossible to establish a diet which includes the necessary elements the body needs.
What exactly does understanding nutrition involve?
Quite simply put: everything you ingest has an influence on your body. So you have to make sure that what you eat contains those elements your body needs. What your body needs are carbohydrates, fat, protein and last but certainly not least water. The amount in which each of these elements is consumed influences greatly the way you feel, react and age
1. Carbohydrates – this is the number one energy source of the body. Our liver and the muscles of our body need a sufficient intake of carbohydrates in order to maintain good health. You can find two major types of carbohydrates ( or carbs as some people prefer to call them):
-simple carbohydrates, which are predominantly of a sweet nature (eg. fructose, sucrose, glucose, etc) and
-complex carbohydrates, which are based on starch (and can be found in corn, brown rice, wheat, etc).
2. Fat – must be taken in the required amount in order for it to moderate the metabolism and protect vital organs. Too much fat in your daily nutrition has the opposite effect however. The two major fats are
-cholesterol : you can get cholesterol from seafood, eggs, dairy products and meat.
- Triglycerides: saturated, poly-saturated and mono-saturated fats, they have an influence on your weight and heart function.
3. Protein – Witout protein the body cannot grow or repair itself. The non-essential amino-acids are manufactured by the body itself ( hence the term non-essential, the body can provide its own ) while the essential amino-acids would have to be introduced into the body by consuming the right foods.
4. Water – the body needs a lot of water: at least eight glasses every day. This amount helps the body to expel toxins, fight dehydration, prevent heat stroke, moderate body temperature, digestion and so many other functions. We all know humans can stay without food up to three weeks; however, they will perish without water in as little as 48 hours.
The right sort of wall balanced nutrition contributes directly to the health of individuals and communities. Clinical research as well as evidence collected through laboratory tests and field work support the importance of concept to the practice of clinical medicine, dentistry, and public health.

Nutrition and sports performance is a complex and essential relationship for serious sports men and women to understand and it can help them achieve success in their chosen sport. Sports nutrition also aids injury prevention and speeds up recovery times from an injury. The correct diet and fluid intake coupled with appropriate training is the difference between winning and losing. Fuelling the body with the right nutrition can be key to success.
Good sports nutrition promotes brain function and muscle activity. Physical training and performance requires the right diet (quantity and quality) that will provide the athlete with energy. Each sport has its own individual requirements as does each individual sports man and woman. These requirements dictate the nutritional demands of training and competition. Sports nutrition applies scientific methods to the applications of the sport to provide a diet that meets the needs of both athlete and discipline.
Sports performance is fundamentally affected by dehydration. The importance of water and fluid replacement in sports nutrition is paramount to supporting the activity of tissue cells in the body. These cells carry nutrients and oxygen around the body, eliminating toxins and removing excess body heat. During physical exercise, body heat increases and water is lost through evaporation or sweating. In hot environments, sports activity can attribute to sweat losses of 4-5 pints an hour. Water loss is partly offset by metabolic water produced from proteins, carbohydrates and fat metabolising in the body. However, sports nutrition dictates that hydrating the body properly requires fluid intake before, during and after activity.
A sports nutritionist will calculate fluid losses by measuring body weight before and after a session to determine how much fluid is required. Optimum levels should never be exceeded as overloading on fluids can lead to stomach discomfort and breathing difficulties during the activity. Modern sports nutrition recommends special carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks for intense activity that has a longer duration but water is typically recommended for low to moderate level activity.
A diet rich in carbohydrate and low in fat improves long-term and short-term sports performance. High-intensity exercise requires more carbohydrates to ensure the liver and muscle glycogen levels are high. High liver and muscle glycogen levels improve performance and glycogen present in the liver is a source of glucose for the brain (important for concentration, alertness and reaction time). A wide range of carbohydrates are required to ensure essential vitamins and minerals are present. Potatoes, bananas, pasta, bread, vegetables, cereals and porridge are a good source of carbs for sport.
Protein plays an important role in sports nutrition by building muscle and repairing it. Athletes should aim to eat a range of foods that will provide the necessary levels of protein. Foods such as lean meat, fish, eggs, beans and pulses, milk, yoghurt, cheese and cereals will provide protein needs. High protein sports nutrition does not necessarily lead to greater muscle mass as excess protein in the body is metabolised or excreted. The extra amount of food required for sport is usually enough to provide the correct intake of protein without resorting to increased portions or protein supplements. High-protein diets can be expensive and will decrease the bank balance before increasing muscle mass. A good sports nutritionist can ensure there are adequate nutrients and calories for an athlete to support the requirements of their sport.

There are various factors that lead to a healthy life – the way we live, our lifestyle, daily physical activities etc but the most important factor is what we eat. With the changing lifestyle our food habit has also changed. Today we are mostly depended on ready made food or those which are easy to eat or cook. We tend to maintain our health by eating as little as possible which reduces our physical strength to a certain level.
Home made foods are no more healthy. We buy fruits and vegetables from markets by judging their freshness. We generally think that quality of the food depends on its freshness but that is not the reality. Now different types of chemicals are added with the fertilizers to increase the growth of food materials, to meet the growing market demand. Even the shopkeepers use color and other harmful agents to make the fruits or vegetables. Organic food may seem to be the best option to get proper nutrition but they are not easily available and are quite expensive.
Every physician recommends to maintain a healthy diet with proper nutrition value but it is becoming difficult to get that. Like every other aspects of life it is our responsibility to make a conscious effort to maintain good health. For proper health tips it is better to consult respective doctors .However proper research work can also guide us in that process.
There are different types of health food supplements available in the market nowadays. They are rich in multivitamins and minerals which help in proper functioning of our body organs and systems .They improves our immunity system and gives us the power to resist harmful diseases. Choosing the right dietary supplement to get the extra nutrition value is significant to get the desired result.

1. Analyze the components of the supplements to understand its benefits
2. It is better to avoid high dose supplements at the initial stage

Try cutting 500 calories from your diet and burning 500 calories with vigorous exercise every day. The average woman will lose weight on a 1,500-calorie-per-day diet, while men can lose weight on about 1,800 calories per day. Permanent healthy weight loss requires permanent lifestyle changes
Dieters who also exercise are more likely to succeed for obvious reasons. They burn a lot more calories than sedentary dieters who attempt to lose weight without initiating a work-out program. Diets that provide less than 800 calories per day also could result in heart rhythm abnormalities, which can be fatal. Plans for diets are available everywhere and can be found in magazines to inform you on making wise decisions. Whatever weight loss program is chosen the consumer will be required to move more and eat less which can be a common misconception in overweight people wanting to lose weight.
The reason these foods are thought to be fattening is that people tend to eat large portions and add toppings such as sour cream, butter and mayonnaise, which are very high in fat. Dieters can eat smaller portions of starches flavored with herbs, spices and other low-fat toppings and still lose weight. The old cholesterol-laden version used whole eggs, full-fat whipping cream and half-and-half, and about 276 calories, 15 grams of fat, 9 grams of saturated fat and 184 milligrams of cholesterol in just one serving. Modified, this tangy dessert has only one-tenth of the fat and 100 calories fewer than the original. Confusion exists when it comes to the vast array of wrinkle creams. One important factor is read the labels.
Five ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits provide 100 calories. But alcohol provides few, if any, nutrients, so if you drink alcoholic beverages and want to reduce your weight, consider reducing or eliminating your alcohol intake. Vegetarian diets can provide the recommended daily amount of all the key nutrients if you choose foods carefully. Fruits and vegetables are the main ingredients in vegetarian diets. If you have questions not answered here, or if you want to lose weight, talk to your health care provider. A registered dietitian or other qualified health professional can give you advice on how to follow a healthy eating plan, lose weight safely and keep it off.
Eating reasonable amounts of natural fats coming from foods like avocados, nuts, and seeds may help you lose more weight by getting you fuller faster and providing the healthy fats your body needs. Joslin Diabetes Center and the Joslin Clinic recommend a diet that provides 40% of total calories from carbohydrate, 30-35% from fat and 20-30% from protein for overweight/obese patients who are at risk for diabetes or who have diabetes. Weight loss for people in these groups is very important for their health yet it can be very difficult for people with diabetes to lose weight. A basic nutritional knowledge tells us that proteins repair and rebuild cells, carbohydrates energize cells and fats provide hormonal foundation for cells. Though the macro-nutrition must remain balanced to maintain optimum health, the calories must cycle to keep the metabolism from slowing down.
There are different methods that can be used and affect the way you lose and/or gain weight. No matter what we do in life, the key to your health is nutrition. The phrase ‘Health is Wealth’ gets more significant with age. It’s what we preserve the most, especially after retirement. Most seniors would love to foresee a life of health, fitness and relaxation. Some active seniors would also want to travel and explore places, and realize a lifetime’s desire. A fit and healthy life is nothing but a result of a wholesome lifestyle. It stems from preventive care and making sure your body gets all it needs to remain in the pink of health. It really isn’t difficult to find important nutritional guidelines to follow. Internet for seniors is a readymade ocean of information. That’s where you go when you need reliable information or health tips.
The importance of good nutrition is the first thing that your doctor would have spoken to you about. Most diseases are a result of a person’s life pattern over the years that add to genetic factors.
Seniors should strive to educate themselves about the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Kids should think of computer for seniors as a gift idea, so they can keep themselves abreast about the latest health and nutrition tips.
Important foods for health:
Leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, oranges and apricots for Vitamin A and beta-carotene.
Milk and other dairy products for calcium.
Nuts, egg, lean meat, tofu and other soy products for protein.
Whole grains for complex carbohydrates.
Fresh fruits for various kinds of Vitamins, fiber, and a minimum amount of sugar (check with your doctor if you’re a diabetic).
Keep Away From:
Sugar filled foods like ice creams, candies, sodas, etc (sugar cravings are strong with some seniors).
Hot dogs, bacons, deep fried foods, fat filled chicken wings are laden with bad cholesterol.
White breads, pastas, pizzas, have been wiped off nutrition during the polishing process.
Needless to say, smoking and excess consumption of alcohol will do your lungs and liver no good. They also serve as catalysts to cancerous cells. Seniors are also better off sticking to vegetarian foods as often as they can, since age slows down the digestive system as well. Apart from following these tips, put in a good bit of exercise and take your nutrition supplements according to prescription and you’ll be raring to go.
Note: Each person’s nutritional requirements differ. Please consult your physician before you start any kind of diet.
